Work of grand proportions for the Playhouse Opera on July 10.
Ushaka KaSenzangakhona is an epic in music and poetry on the great Zulu King Shaka. Composed by the acclaimed Dr James Stephen Mzilikazi Khumalo, with narrative written by Prof Themba Msimang, a Professor of African Languages at the University of South Africa, the opera offers a blend of Zulu and European elements.
Dr Leslie B. Dunner will conduct the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic in a performance of this moving work on July 10. A work of grand proportions, it, tells the story of King Shaka in four stages: Part I: Ukuzalwa Kukashaka (The Birth of Shaka); Part II: Ukukhula Kukashaka (Shaka’s Early Youth); Part III: Umbuso Kashaka (The Reign of Shaka), and Part IV: Ukukhothama Kukashaka (The Death of Shaka).
Soloists will be Linda Bukhosini (soprano); Tina Mene (mezzo-soprano); Sipho Langa (tenor), and Thamsanqa Khaba (bass-baritone). The massed choir includes African Chorus; S.A. Singers; Durban Serenade Choral Society, and the Durban Symphonic Choir. The Narrator will be Mongi Mzobe.
