EDUCATING RITA

In the Tuesday night movie slot, M-Net Stars (Channel 105) will be screening Educating Rita directed by Lewis Gilbert on August 10 at 19h30.

Rita (Julie Walters) is a feisty 26-year-old Liverpool hairdresser who doesn’t want what all her mates want – a husband and a baby. She wants an education, so she enrols at Open University and gets Dr Frank Bryant (Michael Caine) as her tutor. He’s a burned-out poet with a huge chip on his shoulder and a drinking problem. But Rita doesn’t see this. She admires his intellect and qualifications and wants to know everything about literature, classical music and culture.

Unfortunately Rita’s thirst for knowledge doesn’t sit well with her boyfriend, or even the professor, who preferred Rita the rough diamond to Rita the polished gem. Rita will soon discover that when it comes to matters of the heart, an education doesn’t make a blind bit of difference …
