FAMILIA FLAMENCO

(Pic by Val Adamson: Linda Vargas, and members of her Flamenco troupe)

Great news for lovers of Spanish dance.

Linda Vargas, Durban's much-loved 'Queen of Spanish Dance', will return to the local stage with her acclaimed Flamenco Dance Company after an absence of six years. Vargas will present an exhilarating programme entitled Familia Flamenco at the Catalina Theatre on Wilson's Wharf from September 23 to October 3.

True to the traditions of Flamenco communities in Spain, the upcoming season at the Catalina Theatre will follow the pattern of offering a programme performed by a close-knit family group, hence the title of the show.

"Flamenco troupes very often comprise groups of dancers and musicians who are members of the same family," says Vargas. "We are proud to uphold this endearing trend. Our new show celebrates our family ties, as our company is strongly characterised by family relationships, husband-and-wife, mother-and-son, sisters, brothers, and so on. In line with flamenco traditions, anyone who joins our company becomes an extended member of the family."

Set to perform alongside Linda Vargas in Familia Flamenco are her husband, well-known guitarist Demi Fernandez, and fellow dancers Juana Vargas (her sister) and Ramon Fernandez (her son). Other members of the company include David Romero, brothers Enrique and Fernando Marin, Rocio Maya, Daniela Morena, Lorena Vega, Sara Giampietri, Ana Salvatore, Clara Torres and Alicia del Rey.

Vargas's return to the stage will be warmly welcomed by her loyal audience who have enjoyed her shows since the company was first formed back in 1982. Linda Vargas's last show, Desert Flowers, took place in Durban in the Playhouse Drama in 2004.

Familia Flamenco performances will be at 18h00 on September 23, 24, 25 and 30 as well as October 1 and 2. There will be performances at 15h00 on September 24 and 26 and October 3.
