FOM PRE-CONCERT LECTURES

The spring season of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra starts on September 16, and so do the pre-concert lectures, which have proved highly popular with concertgoers.

Organised by the Friends of Music, the lectures are given in the Royal Hotel, Durban, at 18h15 and end at 19h00 in ample time for concert-goers to walk to the Durban City Hall for the concert beginning at 19h30.

The purpose of these talks is to introduce the compositions being performed by the KZNPO that night and thus increase the enjoyment of those attending. The speakers give an entertaining and informative background to the music and provide musical illustrations of the themes to be heard in works on the programme. The speakers are well-known to lecture audiences and they have shown in the past that they have humour and the light touch in discussing music. Tickets for the lectures are R30 each and include tea, coffee and sandwiches which are available from 17h45.

The speakers for the forthcoming symphony season are Michael Green on music by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich (September 16); Michael Green on Chopin and Dvorak (September 23); Andrew Warburton on a programme featuring young performers (September 30); Andrew Warburton on Mozart, Poulenc and Khachaturian (October 7); Ted Brien on Weber, Elgar and Schumann. (October 14); Ted Brien on Beethoven and Dvorak (October 21); Cecile Levin on Haydn and Mozart (October 28), and Michael Green on Offenbach and Beethoven (November 4). Booking is at Computicket.
