There will be a performance of Bittersweet on November 16 at the Shastri Park Community Hall.
“Without prejudice; the 'band wagon' of remembering our forefathers is loaded with events falling over each other as we approach the 16 November and come closer to the end of this anniversary. And so a great hype was created and in many sectors appreciated. Yet again we have banded together (unknowingly in some cases) and made the world aware that we exist.
“One would also notice through all of this that young people are still asking questions. Why did we come here? Did those things really happen? Should we celebrate or should we mourn? etc... “
BitterSweet would certainly provide food for thought in answer to these questions. Directed by Pranesh Maharaj, the play is filled with information and comprises humour, emotion and music that will appeal to the senses and transport audiences to an 1860 that many people have only read about.
“I don’t think November 16 will ever be pronounced a public holiday,” says Pranesh Maharaj. “I don’t think we are going to get companies sending out memos to their staff insisting that Eastern Friday is observed. It is each of our own responsibility to make this day ours...”
