(“Sidewash” by Jennie Meyer)
A multi-media exhibition of acrylics, hand-crafted precious metals, by two well-known artists opens at Durban’s Artisan Contemporary Gallery on November 10.
Artist Jenny Meyer’s paintings of the sea are as much about her passion for its energy, power, sensuality and luminosity as they are about her concern for our coastal environment. And so while her aqueous medium evokes metaphors for the sea and its ultramarine colour signifies its preciousness, we also see in some of her work – most notably Meltdown – her deep concern about how global warming and threats such as the most recent Gulf oil spill will affect our oceans and erode our coastlines.
The holder of University of South Africa Graduate and New Signatures Awards, her work has been exhibited in numerous Biennales and public exhibitions and is to be found in private collections throughout South Africa.
Employing a process dating back to the 9th century, jeweller, Bianca Ladds casts her silver in “lost wax” adding beads, glass, bone, wood and semi-precious stones to the core geometric-shaped jewellery that is her trademark. “I draw my inspiration from the people and places of southern Africa as well as natural forms and textures”, she says of her work.
The exhibition opens at 18h00 on November 10 and runs until December 4. Artisan Contemporary Gallery is situated at 344 Florida Road. More information on 031 312 4364.
