FOM PRE-CONCERT LECTURES

The summer season of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra starts on February 10 (see preceding article or click on the KZNPO’s advert on this page) … and so do the pre-concert lectures, which have proved highly popular with concertgoers.

The lectures, which are organised by the Friends of Music, are given in the Royal Hotel, Durban, at 18h15 and end at 19h00, in ample time for those attending to walk to the Durban City Hall for the concert beginning at 19h30.

The purpose of these talks is to introduce the compositions being performed that night and thus increase the enjoyment of those attending. The speakers give an entertaining and informative background to the music and provide musical illustrations of the themes to be heard in works on the programme.

The speakers are well known to lecture audiences, and they have shown in the past that they have humour and the light touch in discussing music. For the coming symphony season, they are Michael Green - music by Rachmaninov, Liszt and Tchaikovsky (February 10); Michael Green - Schumann, Chopin and Schubert (February 17); Dr Teddy Pillay - Richard Strauss, Ferdinand David and Tchaikovsky (February 24); Bobby Mills - Berlioz, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky (March 3); Ted Brien, - Beethoven (March 10), and Stavros Anthias - Handel, Bach and Brahms (March 17).

Tickets for the lectures are R30 each and include tea, coffee and sandwiches, which are available from 17h45.
