KZNPO WSS SUMMER 2011 SEASON

The summer season of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic’s World Symphony Season 2011 will run from February 10 to March 17 with an impressive line up of top international and local talent in the form of conductors and soloists:

February 10: Dancing with Death. Brother-sister duo, conductor Vladimir Kern and acclaimed pianist Olga Kern have collaborated extensively, with a focus on the music of their Russian forebear, Rachmaninoff. They have a special relationship with South Africa, having toured here several times. They will appear in a programme that includes works by Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Tchaikovsky.

February 17: Secrets, Schumann and a Helping of Schubert. With pianist Florian Uhlig as the featured soloist, conductor Yasuo Shinozaki leads the second concert of the season which begins with a dark secret, and ends with one of the sublime utterances of the symphonic literature. The programme also features work by Chopin.

February 13: Don Juan & Destiny, conducted by Yasuo Shinozaki features KZNPO soloist Anthony Boorer performing Ferdinand David’s Concertino for Trombone in E-flat Major, Op. 4. The concert will also include works by Richard Strauss and Tchaikovsky.

March 3: Shakespeare and Swans. Emil Tabakov conducts a programme of works by Berlioz, Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky with Georgi Anichenko (violoncello) performs Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1.

March 10: A Tale of Two Emperors conducted by Emil Tabakov sees pianist Christopher Duigan perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor) in E-flat Major, Op. 73. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) in E-flat Major, Op. 55 completes the programme.

March 17: Going for Baroque. In the final concert of the season, the KZN Philharmonic will take audiences back into the realm of Baroque splendour with Handel’s Water Music: Suite No. 2 in D Major, HWV 349; Bach’s Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98. The conductor will be Tibor Bogányi an the choral work includes the Clermont Community Choir, Durban Symphonic Choir and Durban Chamber Choir.

Concerts take place at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall, preceded by lectures organised by the Friends of Music in the Royal Hotel at 18h15. Booking is at Computicket.
