Greig Coetzee’s discipline and presence on stage has not been seen of late in Durban. (Review by Thomie Holtzhausen)
Reviewing Greig Coetzee in Johnny Boskak is Feeling Funny felt like having to write a review on The Sound of Music, the movie. Why write anything about something as brilliant, as tried and tested, as flawless and as successful?
Greig’s excellent script, written in rhyming couplets and superbly performed by him stands as the perfect example as to how to act, how to connect with audiences and what theatre is all about (especially South African theatre). I watched in awe from the moment he walked on stage capturing the imagination of the audience not only relying on a remarkable text but truly bringing (a rather difficult) script to life. His discipline and presence on stage has not been seen of late in Durban. Audiences all over have applauded Coetzee and it would be silly of me to say anything more than just – perfect!
The message that we DO need to convey, however, is to local actors and want-to-be-actors: Please go and see Greig Coetzee and learn from him. – Thomie Holtzhausen
