(“Umkhokha”, work by Mandlenkosi Khoza)
Ngiqalazise is a solo exhibition of paintings by Mandlenkosi Khoza running at the BAT Centre until March 11.
Mandlenkosi Khoza was born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and his passion for designing led him to study Civil Draughtsmanship at Mangosuthu University of Technology.
A self-taught painter, he started painting a few years ago after discovering a medium of expression. This is a medium that best suits his need to address issues facing his community. He likes to work with bright colours. Most of his paintings are abstract and rough in texture.
The title “ngiqalazise” means to help raise awareness. Growing up in a township, he noticed a lack of motivation in his community. Earlier on in his life, developed a desire to paint - mostly about life in Durban. Drawing his inspiration from nature and animals, he paints about varies issues ranging from woman abuse and lust to piracy and cultural rituals. He uses his paintings to raise awareness to people who engage with it.
Curated by Nomusa Mtshali, Ukuphuca runs in the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mchunu Gallery until March 11. The BAT Centre Trust is situated at 45 Maritime Place in the Small Craft Harbour, Durban.
