(“Musicians” - Ernest Mtshali, painting on paper)
For over fifty years, the African Art Centre has focused on providing a space for both established and emerging artists from KwaZulu-Natal to showcase their work and to provide patrons to the Centre with a perspective on the multiplicity, depth and diversity of art and culture in the Province. By doing so, the African Art Centre has consistently managed to assist in giving momentum and impetus to numerous artists from the Province, among them the late Gabisele Nkosi, Siphiwe Zulu, William Zulu, Raphael Magwaza, Philemon Sangweni and Derrick Nxumalo.
On Paper is the current exhibition at the African Art Centre and features artworks which cross disciplinary boundaries and relate to the extended field of the material: from silkscreen, paintings, lithographs and linocuts and represents a variety of techniques by both celebrated and highly skilled emerging artists.
The exhibition of artworks, drawn from the holdings of the African Art Centre are all priced very reasonably and showcase the works from diverse periods in the artists' careers highlighting differences, similarities and trends.
This drawing together of a group of artists - including William Zulu, Sphiwe Zulu, Nonhlanhla Mhlongo, Lingo Diko and Bongani Ngubeni, working in a diversity of approaches - provides insight into the personal passages that each artist has experienced and recorded on paper, whilst others comment on social issues and concerns.
On Paper runs until February 20 and the African Art Centre encourages the public to visit this exhibition and support local artists. More information on 031 312 3804/05.
