PAUL HANMER & DAVE REYNOLDS

The Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown this month hosts Paul Hanmer and Dave Reynolds in concert presented in association with Castle Lager, on February 17.

“We promised that we would be looking to spice things up at the Rainbow in 2011 as we work through our 30th year of trade and build up to our big 30th birthday celebrations in December,” explains co-owner Neil Comfort. “When I got wind that internationally acclaimed pianist and composer, Paul Hanmer, along with steelpan virtuoso Dave Reynolds would be touring around South Africa in February, I immediately dropped them a line to see whether they would be interested in playing the Rainbow stage. They were as keen as I was. The tour is entitled Universities & Townships and is supported by MMINO, a Norwegian/South African cultural partnership.”

The tour comes on the back of a grant that they received from the National Arts Council in 2010 to compose new music for piano and steelpans. Besides live performances in the towns that the tour visits, they will also be doing workshops/masterclasses with locally based musicians, with the rhythm section for the live performances featuring locally based artists. For the Durban leg of the tour they will be hooking up with drummer Paki Peloeole and bassist Prince Bulo. A top class line-up allround!

“This is one for the music connoisseur,” adds Neil Comfort, “and we sincerely hope that you will either join us or help spread the word as it would be really great if we could make these Thursday evening performances a more regular feature. The Highway area certainly needs a lot more quality live music. There are a lot of great acts out there that I would like to host at the Rainbow, but not all of them are suited to the more groove orientated Sunday afternoon parties.”

Doors open at 20h00 on February 17. Tickets R30 presale (R50 at the door). The Rainbow Restaurant Estd 1981 is situated at 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown. More information on 031 702 9161 or 083 463 8044 or email: bandwagon@artslink.co.za or visit www.therainbow.co.za
