PAUL YOUNG WORKSHOP

(Paul Young’s work is inspired by the English and European folk art traditions of the 18th & 19th century)

Full day workshop with top UK potter Paul Young in the Midlands.

Midlands ceramic artist Trayci Tompkins has announced that top UK potter Paul Young will visit KZN in February. Internationally recognised and exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and with representation in the New York Metropolitan Museum, he will conduct a workshop on February 26 at the Lionsgate Studio.

Well known for his wheel-thrown and hand-built earthenware, Paul breathes character and life into his work which is inspired by the English and European folk art traditions of the 18th and 19th century.

“His contemporary Staffordshire type pieces reflect Paul’s humour and attention to fine detail and carry honesty and charm that is simply irresistible.” says Trayci Tompkins, who convinced Paul to delay a sabbatical to India in favour of an inspirational whirlwind trip through South Africa whilst sharing his passion and technical skill with clay.

With his studio set in a quirky converted Victorian Station, it is fitting that Paul’s full-day workshop is hosted at Lionsgate in the picturesque Natal midlands which is home to the production studio of Trayci’s Zulu-lulu ceramics. The Lionsgate studio is wrapped by the main train line that connects Johannesburg to the coast and has become quite a talking point for visitors to Tompkins’ studio.

Paul will start off the day with a delightful insight into his ‘world of clay’ presenting slideshow images of his work, including his quaint English workshop, surroundings, inspirations and working methods whilst chatting about why he chose to become a potter and how it is to work within the current British ceramic scene.

He will then move on to demonstrate by throwing some pieces which he will work on throughout the day, including some signature, more decorative. works along with a few domestic wares which he will use to demonstrate his slip trailing techniques.

The workshop takes place on February 26 at the Lionsgate Studio, Lions River, which is approximately 10km from Howick and Midmar Dam). Cost R350 pp (R300 for CSA members) includes tea and cake / lunch, wine and refreshments. Numbers are limited numbers so booking is essential and places will be confirmed once payment is received.
