ALBIE SACHS FOR TIME OF THE WRITER

The recently retired Constitutional Court judge, Justice Albie Sachs, is to deliver the keynote address at the opening of the Time of the Writer festival in Durban on March 14. In keeping with the festival’s focus on Freedom of Expression, the title of Justice Sachs’ address is Free Spirits And Ravaged Souls - Tensions at the heart of freedom of expression.

An icon of the struggle against apartheid, Sachs was instrumental in the establishment of the constitution of South Africa. He served as judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 1994 to 2009, following his appointment by former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. Author of a number of books such as Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter and Justice in South Africa, he is also a two-time winner of the Alan Paton Award.

The 14th edition of the Time of the Writer international writers' festival, organised by the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal), and with principal funding by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, takes place from March 14 to 19. An exciting line-up of more than 20 writers from a dozen different countries will participate in a thought-provoking week of books, dialogue and debate, with evening sessions at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and a broad programme of day activities around the city of Durban.
