International Artist Extraordinaire Conor Mccreedy is set to make his mark in his home country, South Africa. His successes in the art world at the young age of 24 have drawn the interest of international curators, gallery owners, collectors and established artists. Mccreedy is the youngest artist in history to hold a solo exhibition at the National Arts Club in New York, a fixture in the New York art world, located in Gramercy Park.
Conor Mccreedy’s high school years were spent at Hilton College where he also excelled at sport. He matriculated in 2005 with a distinction in art in 2005. His artistic abilities were recognised at school when he was awarded the Kennith Beghin Memorial prize for Art and received First Prize in the University of Natal Arts Competition. Conor’s Art Professor at Hilton College described him as “one of the most outstanding pupils to come through the department of art in the last decade. He is undoubtedly one of the most naturally talented individuals I have ever seen in my lifetime"
This talented artist and sculptor exploded onto the New York art scene three years ago, but his love for his home country has cemented his dream to share his story and art with the place he calls home. Conor will be spending more time in South Africa over the next year sharing his stories, experiences and his investment art. As a South African artist, Conor Mccreedy feels he can be an agent for social change, using his art to reflect on social issues from politics to race and gender relations.
Mccreedy’s latest collection Indigo Blue is inspired by expressionism and the techniques of the painters of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries who used only Ultramarine and Indigo Blue pigments in order to challenge themselves with materials that were considered highly restrictive and of the purest form. Mccreedy placed similar restraints on himself and used only rare Indigo Blue and Periwinkle industrial pigments. The resultant works have been described as powerful, captivating and evocative.
Conor will exhibit some of his work at the In-Toto Art Gallery in Birdhaven, Johannesburg. The opening will be on March 11 and will feature various works by local and international, contemporary and historical artists. This will be a mixed show to celebrate the opening of the Gallery. The following show will be a gallery Portrait Exhibition that opens on April 20. The show will explore and question the idea of portraiture through featuring sculpture, photography, drawings and paintings by local and international, contemporary and historical artists.
