`Rationality is put to the sword and things get a bit loony as the straight-jacket comedy Gino Fabbri Is Completely Nuts takes the Catalina Theatre by storm from March 23.
The rubber-faced comedic antics of Gino Fabbri and his “side-chick” Donna Africa are all geared up to entertain Durban audiences in this irrepressible comedy review which sets out to prove that madness, like stupidity, is an entirely subjective affair. Playing to over 3000 people per run, Fabbri has delighted Cape Town, Eastern Cape and national corporate audiences with his off-beat character-driven humour. ‘Sanity’ is a word not often associated with Fabbri – or more specifically, with his hair-brained assortment of loony-bin characters who have the strangest outlooks on life.
Completely Nuts has less to do with squirrels and everything to do with the crazy shenanigans Gino’s characters get up to, most of whom turn out to be about as sharp as a bowling ball. Take his traffic officer Helmut Ramspoed, a self-proclaimed superhero of traffic ordinance compliance, who takes his job just a little too seriously to be called mentally stable. Or the ultra-loyal English soccer fan, Wayne Noibert Rooney, who’s dumber than a box of hair and completely the misses the message about everything South African whilst on his wife-avoiding world cup soccer sojourn.
You’ll also meet taxi driver, record producer and funeral impresario, Gotitsa Whiti, who defends his heritage while longing for all things American. These are just three of the defective personalities you’ll meet as madness takes its toll in this loony show which will have you rolling in the aisles and even questioning your own sanity.
Donna Africa, the leggy diva with an explosive voice, brings a modicum of class to proceedings while lending her spectacular voice to some foot-stomping chart toppers along the way. A powerhouse favourite with Durban audiences, Africa has been the ace vocalist heading up many of Centrestage’s hit shows that have been staged here in recent years.
Gino Fabbri Is Completely Nuts runs at Catalina Theatre from March 23 to April 10. This is the seventh production brought to Durban by the popular Port Elizabeth-based production company, Centrestage. In 2007, they teamed up with Aaron McIlroy to produce the popular The Magnificent 7, which featured Fabbri as a mincing Mick Jagger, along with the big voiced Africa and the Centrestage All-star Band, for which the multi-talented Fabbri also played drums. This was followed up by The Magnificent 7# 2, Elvis Centrestage, Rory McLaren in Cabaret, The Crazy 80’s in association with Mark Banks and The Magnificent 70’s.
