Internationally renowned, guitarist, singer, songwriter Nibs van der Spuy will perform at the Hexagon Dive in Pietermaritzburg on March 18 and 19.
He has been touring the world with his brand of insightful acoustic guitar mastery and poignant lyrics over the last four years. Journalists from all over the globe, and predominantly Europe, have cited Nibs as a fresh voice in the Nu folk movement. With his virtuosic acoustic guitar style and mesmeric voice he has enchanted listeners from small intimate theatres to large festival stages.
With the release of his latest offering, A House across the River, France’s leading newspaper, Liberation, wrote a full-page article on Nibs and back on the home front, Keith Tamkei from the Sunday Times, praised it with a rare five stars.
Nibs is currently promoting the release of his first live DVD, Live at the Vagabond Café. Released at the end of November last year, this DVD was recorded in December 2009 and the concert features Nibs in a beautiful intimate setting, tucked away in the luscious KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.
The first part of the DVD features Nibs playing solo with material off all his six highly acclaimed albums, as well good friend Farryl Purkiss who guests on a heart-rendering version of Hank William’s Tramp on the Street. In the second hour, long-time drummer/percussionist Gareth Gale joins Nibs for some riveting duo interaction. Filmed up close with three cameras and the audio sound digitally captured, this is the closest you get to experience an organic Nibs van der Spuy Concert first hand. There is also a wonderful “bonus” section with an in-depth interview with Nibs and two rare archival clips featuring Guy Buttery and Piers Faccini.
Nibs van der Spuy appears live at the Hexagon Dive on March 18 and 19 at 19h00 for 19h30. The Hexagon Theatre is situated at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus in Golf Road.
