Stable Theatre will host the Phambili Festival from March 17 to 20. “Phambili” means “Let’s Go Forward” and represents the first of what is hoped will be an annual festival.
Phambili has a strong focus on youth and will involve more than 12 theatre groups in a programme that offers three shows per day over the four-day period. Adding an important business element to this inaugural festival will be two morning workshops presented by Business and Arts South Africa (BASA).
The festival will be co-ordinated by Jerry Pooe and guest artist will be veteran actor/playwright and director, Vivian Moodley, whose roots go back to the early days of Stable Theatre. His show, Cast the First Stone, will be presented on March 18.
March 17: The Comrade written and directed by Tsepiso Motlatsi (18h00) and Truth Heals written and directed by Musawenkosi Shabalala and Bongumusa Shabalala (20h00).
March 18: Wedding Goat written by Dhaveshan Govender and directed by Bheki Mkhwane (15h00); Kwanele (uthando lwabaqulusi) written by Amy Jephta and directed by Themi Venturas (18h00) and Cast the First Stone written and directed by Vivian Moodley (20h00).
March 19: Too Late written and directed by Sqiniseko Khumalo (12h00); Camp 13 written by David Stein and directed by Jerry Pooe (13h30); Mashu the Musical written and directed by Lucky Cele (15h00); To Be Like This Rock from Umsindo Theatre Projects written by Neil Coppen and directed by Debbie Lutge (18h00), and Whilst We Were Dreaming written and directed by Bhekani Biyela (20h00).
March 20: Anti Christ written and directed by Bongani Baai (14h00), iThemba Tattu written and directed by Edmund Mhlongo (16h00), and Angizenzanga from Dumisani Kubeka (20h00)
The workshops hosted by Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) will run on March 17 and 18 from 09h00 to 13h00. They will focus on assisting groups with logistics around the setting up and running of their own companies. The content will cover registration of an organisation, writing of funding proposals, day-to-day operational systems and financial management.
Lliane Loots, Director of Flatfoot Dance Company will take the groups through the journey of how she set up her company and will look at requirements and challenges with funding proposals. David Gouldie, BASA’s KZN representative will focus on the funding process for arts funding agencies and the BASA supporting grant system as well as address corporate funding objectives.
Sharlene Versfeld of Versfeld & Associates: The Communication Works, and also a Business and Arts South Africa Mentor, rounds off the March 17 workshop with insights on marketing and publicity.
Finally, Shabnam Moidheen of Old Mutual, a BASA member, will oversee an informative segment that looks at dealing with finances, managing debt and savings for an organisation.
