Rough Diamonds & Divas is the latest production from The Barnyard Theatres that takes audiences on a dramatic and exhilarating musical ride, exploring the rough and raspy rockers and the dark and dangerous divas that have rocked the world with powerful performances.
The show celebrates the distinctive gravel-voiced superstars from Joe Cocker to Neil Diamond, Bonnie Tyler, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Cher, Kenny Rogers, James Brown and Tom Jones, along with a few surprises.
Who can forget the distinctive gravel voice of the legendary American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond (due to grace South African shores this year) with his iconic hits America and Sweet Caroline, and the uniquely talented Joe Cocker who adds some grit to the mix with Unchain My Heart, You Are So Beautiful and With a Little Help From My Friends?
And a show like this couldn’t be done without a reminder of the vintage rough diamond, old Satchmo himself, Louis Armstrong, singing What a Wonderful World, and dazzling with the grace and distinctive style that made him one of the world’s most beloved entertainers.
And then there are the rough and ready divas who take the stage with raw energy and powerful vocals, including Bonnie Tyler with Holding Out For a Hero and Total Eclipse of the Heart; Tina Turner’s We Don’t Need Another Hero and I Can’t Stand The Rain; and Cher with Bang Bang. And, of course, the classic and timeless duets like Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes’ Up Where We Belong, and Neil Diamond and Dolly Parton’s You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.
Rough Diamonds & Divas is directed by Adrian Poulsen (who directed the hit shows Diamonds & Pearls, Super Troupers and Dancing Queen) and features Johan Liebenberg, Percy Smith and Lee Paver on male vocals with Petro Liebenberg and Candice Malander-Thorn on female vocals. The band comprises Raymond Verster on keyboards, Jason Guile on guitar and vocals, Fresh on bass guitar, Michael Mamisimong on drums and Joseph Shumane on saxophone.
