(Sazi Dlamini)
The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music presents Sazi ne SKOKIANA band on March 2.
Dr Sazi Dlamini (guitarist, composer and educator) was born in KwaZulu-Natal. He graduated at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and lectures music at UKZN’s School of Music. Dr Dlamini plays township- jazz style and performs on indigenous Nguni musical instruments. He has composed music for jazz ensemble and big band.
The SKOKIANA band was formed in 1990 and has a turnover of musicians which includes bassists Bongani Sokhela, Monde Futshane, Phiwe Solomon, Mandla Zikalala, Njeza Dlamini, Paul Nowinski, Prince Bulo and Bernard Mndaweni. The line-up also included drummers and percussionists Geoffrey Tracey, Carlos di Stasi, Lulu Gontsana, Dumisani Hlela, Sisa Sopazi, Nkanyezi Cele, Chicco Mdima, Bonga Mzimela and Lebohang Mothabeng while Fezile Faku (trombone/trumpet/ fluegelhorn) has also been part of the group.
Wednesday’s concert features Sazi Dlamini (composer, guitar/voice), Sithembiso Ntuli (tenor saxophone), Sakhile Simani (trumpet), Bernard Mndaweni (bass) and Paki Peloeole (drums).
