South African music legend Syd Kitchen is undoubtedly one of South Africa's finest and most eclectic musicians that has touched the hearts and souls of people throughout the world.Sadly, Syd has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and the late stage at which diagnosis has taken place leaves little room for treatment except to manage his pain and discomfit as well as he can.
Open Strings is privileged to honour Syd's request in setting up a tribute gig for him on April 2 which will include several of his close musician friends, who will be performing in addition to Syd on the day. These include: Syd Kitchen himself along with Roly Struckmeyer, Nux Schwartz, Brandon Hunt, Madala Kunene, Aidan Cornhill, John Ellis, Melanie Lowe, Maisha, Hinds Bros, Sazi Dlamini, Steve Fataar, Dave McMillan, Matthew Wilkinson, David Birch and Rob Warren.
The event will kick off with a special screening of Syd's latest movie, called Fool in a Bubble, a documentary film by Joshua Sternlicht featuring the words and music of Syd Kitchen.
All proceeds received at the door will go towards helping cover Syd's living expenses resulting from lost income over this very trying period.
Face Studios (www.face-studios.com) will be recording the live sessions and engineering for the day and night will be handled by sound engineer, Dale "Dang" Wardell of Habit To fame.
Open Strings in Westville provides a unique, chilled and vibey atmosphere, a perfect venue to host special intimate acoustic sessions such as these. Open Strings provides an opportunity for the audience and artists to mingle together for an unforgettable afternoon and night of great music, good food and memorable moments.
The hosts are husband and wife team, Rod (Face Studios & Maisha) and Karen (Foxy Creations), with Karen providing Boerie rolls and Veggy Breyani for sale whilst Rod looks after the more technical requirements of the show. The entrance fee is a minimum of R50, with all door proceeds going directly to Syd (please donate more if possible). A food and cash bar will be available.
