They're back together! Ten years after their last show together, singers Sandra Styles and Helen Vermaak have once again joined forces to present an evening of musical mayhem and harmonious delight with Paint The Town.
The musical revue is a wacky, tongue-in-cheek dig at women and men and the drudgery and romance of relationships, as seen from a female perspective.
Accompanying them for the first time is local music legend and jazz pianist extraodinaire, Jeff Judge. To complete the foursome is popular local musician and bandleader, Ryan Calder, this time on drums. Songs include old favourites like All that Jazz, Crazy, Evergreen, The Lady is a Tramp, We've only Just Begun and One Fine Day, and is an eclectic mix of songs taken from various genres, but all about women's experience of love and relationships, from teenage crushes to mature reflections.
Directed by Peter Mitchell, Paint the Town uses the full range of the two singers' extensive talents: Vermaak’s classical and contemporary approach is contrasted with Style’s jazzy blues vocal slant. The result is a relaxed yet engaging performance which is both amusing and moving. Their voices blend extremely well as a duo, and their individual styles make for a varied and dynamic entertainment.
Paint the Town runs at the Hexagon Dive, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg from April 14 to 17 with shows on Thursday and Friday at 19h00 for 19h30 (Sunday at 17h30 for 18h00).
