XOLANI HLONGWA FOR QUAYS

The popular Whole Food Market, previously based at Colombo Tea and Coffee, is moving to the elegant, spacious Quays in Brown Road, on the edge of the canal in the Point Development area with their first market in the new location taking place on April 7 from 17h00 to 22h00.

Adding ambiance to the evening will be “U C” – a funky jazz band under the baton of trombonist / drummer Xolani Hlongwa featuring Cooks Gasela on sax. Hlongwa teaches music at Umlazi Com Tech, and the band will feature some of his most promising students.

The Whole Food Market has enjoyed a series of evening markets at Colombo and morning markets in Bulwer Park and is now adding a third venue to their repertoire – the huge function room, outdoor picnic area and mezzanine sun-downer deck at The Quays which is part of the new Point Road development project. This new initiative continues the vision of Glenwood Community Forum member and market convenor Darryl Hofmann to offer a series of inspired gourmet-events in interesting places.

With summer becoming autumn, Hoffman wanted a venue from which to enjoy the beautiful change in season – somewhere with a view and a breeze. The Quays is situated on the island surrounded by the canal which boasts gondola rides and pedal boats. With the weather still be so balmy, an airy, breezy open venue was a significant requirement. There is more space for more food vendors, more crafters as well as picnic spaces and an elegant sun-downer deck.

Hofmann has carefully chosen stall holders which will create a deli-vibe – allowing visitors to purchase produce from the stalls, and assemble a meal, indoor picnic style. There will be plenty to taste, as well as boutique wines, cocktails, salon beers and beer from micro-breweries. Sundowner specials will be on offer from 17h00 to 18h00.

There is ample parking – alongside the Quays, at the Durban Underwater Club and nearby uShaka, and there will be additional security personnel on duty. To find The Quays – take the second left after uShaka at Wodka, and go over the canal bridge as though going to Durban Underwater Club. Night Market will be on your right.
