SPICE 'N STUFF

(Shika Budhoo and Kajal Maharaj)

Ashwin Singh's Spice 'n Stuff, directed by Themi Venturas will have its final showing in Durban from May 25 to 28 at the Catalina Theatre.

Having enjoyed highly successful runs at the Catalina and Playhouse Theatre respectively, this thought provoking play will next tour the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square in Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, before heading to India later in the year. The show's popularity stems from its engaging plot and star-studded cast.

Set in Durban’s Grey Street, the play reveals a changing social and economic environment, one which the characters struggle to contend with. Throw in a medley of colourful characters, a spice thief and you have an entertaining and thought-provoking work that has received much critical acclaim. With an all-star cast of familiar faces, Spice 'n Stuff stars Shika Budhoo, Rory Booth, Ashwin Singh, Ntando Mncube, Dhaveshan Govender and Kajal Maharaj.

Focusing on the activities of the play’s central character, female trader Rita, the play builds towards a dramatic finale. Crossing racial and cultural barriers, Spice 'n Stuff is a rich comedic drama that vividly describes the complexities and wonders of the community it portrays. This may be the last chance to catch this authentic Durban piece, before it heads to Johannesburg and India, with many tour dates planned hereafter.

In his review for artSMart, Clinton Marius writes: “Like a good curry, Spice ‘n Stuff is a varied mix of appealing ingredients, perfectly flavoured with a bit of a kick ... and a pleasant aftertaste that remains long after one has left the theatre. Singh’s beautifully crafted play is rich in humour and in sadness, peppered with witty one-liners and moving insights… It deserves to be seen by as wide an audience as possible… so make the effort and go and see this gem”.

Spice 'N Stuff runs from May 25 to 28 at the Catalina Theatre, Wilson's Wharf. Tickets R65 booked through the Catalina on 031 305 6889 or email tsibisi@mweb.co.za
