(Bheki Mkhwane)
Belly of the Beast is the story of vigilante justice and making up for the sins of the father, when a man comes home at night to find an intruder in his house. This dramatic new South African two-hander comes to the Playhouse Loft Theatre from June 7 to 19.
This is the fourth production in repertory from innovative new theatre company, Just in Time Productions. Just in Time creates new and old South African works and aims to give new theatre-makers a platform to explore their ideas. Stakeholders include veteran theatre producer / director Maurice Podbrey together with much-loved Durban theatre personality Bheki Mkhwane and respected cultural administrator, Ntuthuko Khuzwayo. They have just enjoyed a successful season of three plays in repertory: Sitting around the Fire; A Plague of Heroes and uThembalethu /Tshepang.
Bheki Mkhwane performs opposite his young actor son, Menzi, in this taut two-hander written by Dhaveshan Govender. It was originally written as Legacy for the Twist Project earlier in the year, and first staged by Ubuntu Productions at the PANSA Musho Theatre Festival in January. It has now been reworked with a new director, Rob Klarmann, and a new cast – the father-son combination of Bheki and Menzi Mkhwane
A man arrives in his home after a hard day’s work to discover a young burglar. What does this boy want? Money? To kill him? What unfolds is a complex story of past incidents that tie these two together.
