BARRY VAN ZYL & JOHN ELLIS

The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (UKZN) will present Barry Van Zyl (drums and percussion) in collaboration with John Ellis (vocals and guitar) on July 27. This concert is the first in a series of weekly concerts, popularly known as Trios and is presented by the Centre every Wednesday during UKZN’s academic calendar.

Barry van Zyl is a Cape Town-based session musician, producer and music creator. Over the last 12 years he has been a member of the Johnny Clegg Band, which has allowed him the opportunity to play on international stages around the globe. His highlights as a performer include playing to 150,000 people at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Concert in London’s Hyde Park and various performances with Peter Gabriel, Jimmy Buffet, Robert Plant and Brian May. Recent highlights include: the new Annie Lennox album Christmas Cornucopia , the new Johnny Clegg album Human, the internationally released feature film Themba and the Oscar winning feature film Tsotsi.

Barry has worked on numerous projects. As a co-composer and co-producer Barry has done multiple album projects with two-time Grammy winner Robin Hogarth.AFRIC is an Irish/South African collaboration with Barry and Fiachna O’Braonain of the Hothouse Flowers which draws on ancient Seanos music from Galway, African voices, Celtic whistles, African rhythms and overdriven rock guitar!

John Ellis, of Tree 63 fame, has recently been nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) in the Best Rock album category (English).

At The Centre for Jazz, Barry Van Zyl and John Ellis some of John Ellis’s compositions as well as modern rock classics with plenty of improvisation. They will also feature a few specially invited guests.
