Durban has lost another prime performing arts talent with the death of actor, singer and voiceover artist Sduduzo “Sdu” Kawula who passed away suddenly yesterday.

He had been undergoing treatment over the last few years which involved an annual blood transfusion because his red blood count was off. He was submitted for tests last week and he was fine on the weekend but was suddenly admitted to hospital yesterday (August 16) where he died of liver failure.

“This is very sad,” says arts publicist Illa Thompson. “Durban has lost a wonderful comic actor, and we have lost a special friend.“

Sduduzo was last seen in Durban in the Playhouse Loft in April 2011 when he appeared in Sitting Round the Fire, written and directed by Bheki Mkhwane, which formed part of the launch of the new theatre company, Just in Time Productions. The production also appeared at the 2011 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

More tributes to follow.
