FAMILIA FLAMENCO

Responding to popular demand, Linda Vargas, Durban’s ‘Queen of Spanish Dance’, is to return to the Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf with her acclaimed Flamenco Dance Company for a brief season next month. She will present many of the numbers in her exhilarating programme, Familia Flamenco, that wowed Catalina audiences last year, along with some notable new additions to the show.

True to the traditions of Flamenco communities in Spain, the upcoming season at the Catalina Theatre follows the pattern of offering a programme performed by a close-knit family group, hence the title of the show.

Familia Flamenco celebrates our family ties, and anyone who joins our company becomes an extended member of the family,” explains Vargas. “But as we are always pushing ourselves to meet new challenges and explore new boundaries, this year’s show introduces some exciting additions to our repertoire.

“Every time I create a new dance work, I bring to it my live experience, reflecting who I am now,” she adds, sharing the passion she and her dancers bring to their work. “This philosophy pertains to the other dancers in our company, too, so we hope the results will delight both newcomers to the Flamenco genre as well as longstanding enthusiasts.”

Set to perform alongside Linda Vargas in Familia Flamenco are her husband, the well-known guitarist, Demi Fernandez, and fellow dancers, Juana Vargas (her sister) and Ramon Fernandez (her son). Other members of the company include David Romero, brothers Enrique and Fernando Marin, Rocio Maya, Daniela Morena, Lorena Vega, Sara Giampietri, Ana Salvatore, Clara Torres and Alicia del Rey.

Familia Flamenco runs at the Catalina Theatre from Thursdays to Sundays, initially from August 11 to 14 followed by August 18 to 21. Thursdays to Saturdays shows at 19h00 (Sundays at 15h00). Early booking is advised. Tickets R80 (R60 matinees) booked on 031 305 6889.
