(Gospel producer wins international award for unrelenting contribution to African gospel music)
Durban-born Lindelani Mkhize wins international award for unrelenting contribution to African gospel music
Lindelani Mkhize’s continued promotion and advancement of African gospel has been saluted internationally as he won the category Best Contribution to African Gospel Music at the second Africa Gospel Music and Media Awards, held in July in London’s prestigious Lighthouse Hall.
Mkhize is no stranger to competition as he is not only an entrepreneur and producer - he is a co-founder of arguably South Africa’s most prolific gospel group, Joyous Celebration – but he is also a judge on the television talent search series I Want To Sing Gospel.
“Because I sit on the judging panel of a talent show means I appreciate winning the Best Contribution to African Gospel Music Award so much more. I know what it takes to impress critical judges who want only the best,” says the Durban-born Mkhize. “More importantly, the public should not overlook the fact that gospel awards are not only to recognise and celebrate the efforts of those in the sector, but their primary purpose is to praise and worship God through music.”
With a name like Lindelani, which is an isiZulu phrase that means “to await good things”, the multi award-winning producer is doing exactly what has been expected of him from birth.
He has been making an undeniable impact in the local gospel music industry for more than 10 years, mostly through Joyous Celebration. With Mkhize as their co-director, this gospel concept – as they prefer being called as the dynamic outfit is constantly transforming at least every two years – they continue to produce joyous harmonies that have seen them release more than 10 celebrated albums.
From his hometown of Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, the name Lindelani Mkhize has become synonymous with inspiring gospel music and his recent feat of proudly representing South Africa by winning the Best Contribution to African Gospel Music Award bolsters the significant role he has played in putting African gospel on the world map.
Lindelani Mkhize appeared with MTN Joyous Celebration in July when they returned to Durban to celebrate their 15-year milestone.
