MIM AT HOWARD COLLEGE

Miriam Erasmus will perform in the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s free lunch-hour music programme in Howard College Theatre on August 15.

Affectionately known widely as “Mim”, Miriam Erasmus started her folk singing career in England during the 60s and 70s, when she made a name for herself as Miriam Backhouse. Her repertoire reflects her upbringing in the Sussex countryside where she learned traditional British folk songs from her grandmother, with the addition of the protest songs of the folk revivalists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Now she lives in Botha’s Hill, where she writes songs about her home and her life in South Africa.

Her last appearance at the Howard College in September 2008 was an enormous success. The students and the audience learnt and sang her folk songs, with harmonies, quite unaware of themselves, and loved it. This is the aural tradition of singing and passing on the songs, at its best.

The concert takes place in Howard College on August 15 from 12h15 to 13h00. Entrance to Monday lunch-hour concerts is free. More information from Babalwa Mentjies, Concert Organiser, on 031 260 3353 or email: mentjies@ukzn.ac.za
