STIRLING HIGH BIG BAND

The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (UKZN) presents East London's Stirling High Big Band directed by Alan Webster on August 10.

The Stirling High Big Band comprises of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombone, guitars, piano, bass, drums, and vocals.

The band has toured around South Africa over the past few years, as well as Germany, Holland, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Britain, and has a reputation as a top youth jazz band, performing regularly at the National Arts Festival and with the jazz bands of UCT and Stellenbosch.

In 2009, and again in 2010, eight members of the Stirling band were selected for the 18-member National Schools Jazz Band and a number of the past band members have gone on to become professional jazz musicians.

The band’s repertoire includes Big Band classics like In the Mood, The Girl from Ipanema and Fly Me To the Moon, arrangements like Four by Miles Davis as well as a variety of vibrant modern arrangements in Latin American and Funk styles.

The performance will take place on August 10 at 17h30 (doors opens at 17h00) at theCentre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone bldg on the University of KwaZulu-Natal campus.
