As part of its mandate to promote the arts, in every form, EThekwini Municipality’s Arts and Living Cultures Department will present the best of what South African Comedy has to offer. Featuring five of the most sought-after stand-up comedians in the country, Durban Comedy Jam will be held at the Suncoast SunZone on September 30.
The Durban Comedy Jam is the brainchild of a comedy development programme that was established by the Municipality’s Arts and Living Cultures Department. “It is way for us, as the City, to bridge a gap between upcoming comics and the more established and commercial comics while also recognising comedy as a business and art form, rather than the mere telling of funny jokes”, says Monwabisi Grootboom, the department’s Manager.
Among the headline acts is 38 year-old stand-up comedian and promoter John Vlismas. He is best known for his jokes that secured the South African Comedy Awards for Best Stand Up of the Year in 2007 and a spot in the finals in the 2008 Yuk Yuk Great Canadian Laugh Off. No stranger to controversy, Vlismas, has made a name for himself in the industry and is dominating the comic stages alongside other male greats.
Holding it down for the ladies will be Tumi Morake, one of the country’s leading comediennes and actors. With an impressive CV that includes theatre direction, producing, stage performing arts and acting, Tumi has had a very successful career in television and stage and this has seen her win a number of awards for her contribution to the arts.
Also on the programme are Mark Banks, Kaseran Pillay and Felix Hlophe.
Durban Comedy Jam will take place on September 30 at 20h00 at Suncoast SunZone. Tickets R120 at Computicket. More information from Monwabisi Grootboom on 031 311 4479, 071 305 6959 or email grootboomm@durban.gov.za
