SONGS FROM UP NORTH

The Centre For Jazz & Popular Music (UKZN) presents Songs from up North with Swedish vocalist Karin Bengmark this evening (September 21).

Karin Bengmark is an accomplished singer, songwriter and voice teacher from Goteborg, Sweden. She has appeared as a soloist and back-up vocalist all over the world with various artists for almost two decades. She has embraced many musical genres and sings Jazz, Latin, Soul, Gospel, Salsa and Folk Music.

Karin is also co-leader of the Brandqvist/Bengmark quartet with HÃ¥kan Brandqvist (piano), Fredrik Nilsson (double bass) and Emil Brandqvist (drums). She has released two albums through her independent label Frostros Records.

In 2008, Karin lived with her family in Durban for six months and worked as a voice teacher at UKZN. She returns to South Africa as a visiting lecturer and will be giving numerous workshops at UKZN School of Music. She will be joined by her former colleagues Neil Gonsalves (piano), Mageshen Naidoo (guitar), Bruce Baker (drums) and Ildo Nandja (bass).

The performance starts this evening (September 21) at 17h30 (doors opens at 17h00). Tickets R30 (R20 pensioners and R10 students). The venue is the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone Building on the UKZN Howard College Campus. A cash bar will be available.
