As has become customary at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, one Trios Session in the month of October is dedicated to giving the UKZN School of Music’s final year Jazz performance students the opportunity to showcase and fine-tune their work over the course of the semester in preparation for their final recitals in November.
This year, the ensemble features Sakhile Simani on trumpet, Shireen Elias on vocals, Genius Sibeko on piano, Talent Mbatha on bass and drummers Joshua Klynsmith and Devon Hore. Trombonist Goodman Nxongo will feature as a guest artist.
Their repertoire will include original compositions from within the ensemble as well as cover versions of performances by trumpeter Wallace Roney, bassist Brian Bromberg, keyboardist Jeff Lorber and trombonist Steve Turre. Student performances are generally characterized by energetic performances of well-rehearsed material, and in combination with a soulful and generally funky repertoire, this should make for an entertaining evening.
The final year performance students preview takes place on October 19 at 17h30 (doors opens at 17h00). A cash bar is available. Tickets R30 (R20 pensioners, R10 students). The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) is situated on Level 2, Shepstone Building. More information on 031 260 3385 or email Thulile Zama on Zamat1@ukzn.ac.za
