JONI MITCHELL

The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (UKZN) will present The Music of Joni Mitchell on October 5.

Joni Mitchell, poet, artist and musician, is considered one of the great songwriters of the 20th century, with a music career spanning almost 50 years, and over 30 recorded albums.

Although always on the fringe of mainstream popular music, her songs have been covered by singers from diverse musical backgrounds. She has an enormous following of discerning music listeners all over the world, and she has been one of the major influences on singer-songwriters since the 1960s.

Her music evolved constantly, pushing boundaries and blurring the distinction between genres and, whatever the arrangements, her melodies and harmony are distinctive and the poetry of the lyrics always shines through. It was difficult to pick a small selection from such a large repertoire of powerful songs, but this concert attempts to present a cross section of her musical evolution.

Celebrating the music of Joni Mitchell is an all star band line-up of Melvin Peters (piano), Mageshen Naidoo (guitar), Bruce Baker (drums), Jeff Robinson (sax), Ildo Nandja (bass) and Fiona Tozer (acoustic guitar/vocals) while the other vocalists are Shannon Kenny, Debbie Mari and Haylea Hounsom.

The Music of Joni Mitchell takes place at the Centre for Jazz & Popular Music (UKZN) on October 5 at 17h30 (doors opens at 17h00). Tickets R30 (R20 pensioners/R10 students). The Centre is situated on Level 2, Shepstone Building. More information or bookings on 031 260 3385 or email: Zamat1@ukzn.ac.za
