Melanie Scholtz in duo with her husband, guitarist Gorm Helfjord will perform as part of the KZN Youth Jazz and Popular Music Festival on October 26th. This concert is the penultimate in our current Trios concert series.
Award winning songbird Melanie Scholtz has achieved praise in South Africa as well as internationally. Highlights in her career thus far have been winning the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters competition in 2002 as Best Jazz Vocalist and performing the South African Anthem at the Presidents’ Cup in 2003 in front of a world-wide audience of 1 billion people.
Melanie has performed on live Norwegian radio as well as part of a Music against Misery concert in Holland in 2002. She has worked with the cream of South Africa’s musicians - Jimmy Dludlu, Sibongile Khumalo and Judith Sephuma, amongst others.
In 2006, Melanie Scholtz finally released her debut full-length solo album, entitled Zillion Miles with a follow up album in 2009 with Norwegian trumpeter and producer, Ole Jorn Myklebust. She was the Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz for 2010.
Melanie’s repertoire includes an assortment of jazz standards that are beautifully arranged with a modern twist, and her original compositions from her albums. Her appearance at the Centre for Jazz promises to be an intimate and memorable performance.
