Local online art gallery StateoftheArt.co.za has unveiled a slick new look and a unique new service called Collectors Resale.

Collectors Resale is a curated online secondary market specialising in works by early career South African artists. The service was launched in response to the numerous requests the site received from people wanting to resell art from their private collections. These are works that are not lucrative enough for the big auction houses - and galleries are reluctant to touch them for fear of dampening the value of their primary market inventory.

Founder of StateoftheArt.co.za Jennifer Reynolds spotted a gap in the market for a platform from which art collectors could edit their personal collections. However, she emphasizes: “This isn't bid or buy: the works available at StateoftheArt.co.za all go through a critical vetting process.

“We have a Curatorial Panel that reviews the submissions,” she continues. “It is strictly our choice. We will reject a work for listing on the basis that it might not be original, not emerging, not quality (in our modest opinion).” To make the cut, art works must “be by early career South African artists, interesting, provocative, and beautiful – though not necessarily always all at the same time.”
