GUESS SUMMER SHOW

Bright Lights and Glitz & Glam take centre stage in Durban. (Review by Raeesa Abdul-Karrim)

Durban was the place to be on Wednesday night, not just because the city is hosting COP17 but more so for the fact that Durbanites were treated to the sizzling hot new GUESS Summer Show. Exclusive to Durban Fashion Royalty with guests consisting of celebrities, VIPs and media it was certainly a fabulous way to welcome in the festive season.

On arrival we were treated to Guess Hampers that I have to admit I couldn’t wait to peek into. After all, who can say no to GUESS merchandise? Most guests were uncharacteristically early for the fashion show. They couldn’t wait to get into the completely transformed DLI Hall and start snapping away pics of themselves and the decor, which they will undoubtedly share with their friends on a social network site. It was certainly a night in Durban to be remembered - even the weather gods were pleased.

So, on to the Show! Separated into five themes, it quite fittingly began with Denimology. Established in 1981, GUESS began as a jeans company and this segment featured what is termed as the essence of GUESS; denim layering and “pops of colour” as well some very sexy swimwear. The other themes Bright Lights, Pastel Notes and Animal Instinct showcased a range of styles from casual to edgy, sophisticated to wild, all encompassing the “fashion-forward, free-spirited and electric” style that is associated with the GUESS brand.

However, my favourite had to be Glitz & Glam. Clearly focused on evening wear, it was all shimmer and shine! The guests were enthralled, showing their appreciation not only for the glamorous clothing but the steamy models as well. Both male and female Cape Town based models certainly added to the eye candy that was on display.

The popularity of GUESS bags are always evident in malls, every third or fourth woman you is see is more than likely carrying a GUESS bag. After viewing this collection it is almost certain they will maintain their popularity although I’m not so sure whether the trend will follow through to men. All in all, the evening certainly left the guests satisfied.

So, if your fashion sense leans towards sophisticated, fun, edgy and slightly less conservative the GUESS Summer collection is definitely worth looking at. - Raeesa Abdul-Karrim
