HOMEMADE GIFTS VINTAGE STYLE

Wealth of creative ideas from Sarah Moore. (Review by Janet Whelan)

For all those caught up in the trend of ‘getting back to basics’ and the ‘handmade revival’, Homemade Gifts Vintage Style by Sarah Moore provides a wealth of creative ideas.

The author outlines what to look out for and what to avoid when sourcing items to use or re-use for creating the many vintage style gifts shown in the book. She also gives a list of basic tools, items you can buy and those you can hoard for future use. here are tips for using a sewing machine and instructions and diagrams of four simple stitches for hand sewing. The materials range from buttons, bottles and boxes to reclaimed clothing and wallpaper among other things.

Templates are provided for many of the items such as the charming lavender bunnies and all the articles illustrated come with detailed instructions. There is a particularly delightful advent calendar and easy-to-make layered cake-stand among the many other creative ideas in this book. Although the list of suppliers refers to the United Kingdom, readers should have no difficulty in finding the requisite and useful materials anywhere. This volume is a useful and informative addition to the bookshelf of all aspiring creators of homemade gifts as well as the experienced homemade gift maker.
