The short-story competition hosted by the Mondays at St. Clements programme earlier this year attracted over 100 submissions.
“We have therefore decided to make this an annual event to coincide with the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere,” says founder member, Professor Pieter Scholtz. “In celebration of the shortest day of the year which falls on the 20 June in 2012, Mondays at St. Clements is celebrating National Short Story Day. We follow the lead of a UK-wide celebration with the same name, an initiative aimed at promoting fiction in its succinct form, focusing on South African writing that lends itself to this tradition.”
A booklet entitled Le Petit Déjeuner, including 50 of the short stories submitted for the competition, was published by the Breakfast Club in 2011. Volume Two, including a further 50 short stories submitted for the 2012 competition, will be published later in the year.
Short Story Competition 2012 rules that the length of the story is precisely 100 words (no more, no less) excluding the title. Stories of more or less than 100 words will be disqualified.
Entries should state author’s name and word count and be typed in large font (eg. Times New Roman 14 pt) Authors’ names will be deleted for adjudication and stories will be adjudicated by three judges. The author of the winning story will receive a presentation box of Wildekrans Estate wine. All stories will be read at St. Clements on June 18 followed by the presentation.
The closing date is May 28, 2012, and entries by email to kwasuka1@mweb.co.za
