Blood Orange, superbly performed by master physical theatre actor by Craig Morris and directed by Greig Coetzee, can be seen at the Hilton College Theatre on February 9 and 10.
It is the story of Gecko, a boy who looks at the world somewhat differently. Opening with a man landing on the moon and ending with Nelson Mandela riding a mermaid to freedom, the story moves quickly, exploring the skewed life of a teenage boy growing up in apartheid South Africa - giving glimpses of a barefoot boy frolicking in the hills of rural Natal and of his 'jagged' school days in the Cape where "the Simonsberg drinks the blood orange sun at dusk"; his exploits as a wet-behind-the-ears schoolboy; his tragi-comedy sexual and political awakenings at high school and his darkest moments of being conscripted into the army.
Craig Morris has performed in numerous stage productions in South Africa and abroad, winning coveted awards for Choreography and Dance. He has appeared many times at The Witness Hilton Arts Festival and is best known for his work in Blood Orange, Attachments 1-7 and Bar Flies. He was selected to perform with Cirque du Soleil. Craig's performances of Blood Orange at the Hilton College Theatre will be the highlight of a week-long residency with Hilton boys studying Drama.
Award winning writer and actor Greig Coetzee is also no stranger to Hilton, having appeared on many occasions in White Men with Weapons; The Blue Period of Milton van der Spuy, Johnny Boskak is feeling Funny and Happy Natives.
