MESSIAH RETURNS TO PLAYHOUSE

(Naum Rousine)

Handel’s Messiah, the world’s most popular choral masterpiece, returns to The Playhouse Company’s Opera Theatre for one performance on Easter Sunday.

The production will feature the Durban Symphonic Choir joining forces with The Playhouse Company Chorale, performing in collaboration with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Naum Rousine.

Adding an element of visual grandeur to the experience of hearing this greatly loved piece, which is usually performed on the concert platform, The Playhouse Company’s semi-staged production of Messiah will be directed by Themi Venturas.

Highlights include a wealth of evergreen choral items. Among these are the magnificent Hallelujah Chorus, along with equally splendid numbers such as For Unto Us A Child Is Born, And The Glory of the Lord and many more, also benchmark solos such as Every Valley, He Was Despised, I Know That My Redeemer Liveth, O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion, Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion, The Trumpet Shall Sound and Why Do The Nations So Furiously Rage Together – to name but a few.

The production features a stellar line-up of soloists, including soprano Zanne Stapelberg, mezzo soprano Violina Anguelov, tenor Mhlaba Buthelezi and baritone Aubrey Lodewyk.

Performed in countries across the globe since its premiere in 1742, Messiah is Handel's most famous creation, and stands at a pinnacle of Western choral literature. In the field of music it is widely regarded as one of the most sublime examples of human creation. Over the past six decades or more, some 200 recordings have been available to enthusiasts. Music lovers in KZN are urged to seize this opportunity of seeing and hearing the great work performed live this Easter.
