(Barry Thomson)
Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest is currently hosting Brothers in Arms, a tribute to one of the world’s truly great guitar maestros, Mark Knopfler (OBE). A singer, songwriter and film score composer, Knopfler has written some of the most memorable music of the last three decades.
He is best known as lead vocalist and songwriter for the British rock band, Dire Straits, which he co-founded in 1977 with his brother David. Together, Dire Straits have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date.
Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock reigned, Dire Straits played a more conventional style, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970's
The show features Barry Thomson, Dawn Selby, Mali Sewell and Jason Andrew as well as Shaun Dragt on guitar. They perform some of Knopfler’s best-known songs including Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of Love, Down to the Waterline, Private Investigations, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Solid Rock, Calling Elvis and, of course .. Brothers in Arms.
Produced by Gary McKenzie, the show will attempt to be as true to the originals as possible. “We’re going to attempt to re-create the sound of the Knopfler’s music as it was done in the day.” says McKenzie. “I don’t know many artists who can pull that off as well as Barry (Thomson)”
