ERNANI

Verdi classic comes exclusively to Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor theatres.

Opera Live fans have been enchanted by the extraordinary fifth season of the Met Opera currently screening exclusively at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor Theatres, and audiences can now enjoy Verdi’s Ernani.

“Due to popular demand, we have extended our Opera Live screenings to include select Ster-Kinekor Theatres in addition to the Cinema Nouveau sites, reaching as wide an audience as possible. Our successful attendances reinforce the fact that opera is widely appealing to our local market and we are confident that Verdi’s Ernani will keep audiences captivated,” says Raksha Singh of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

Four extraordinary singers star in Verdi’s Ernani. American soprano Angela Meade, whose rise to fame was chronicled in the 2008 documentary The Audition, steps into the spotlight as Elvira, a noblewoman pursued by three men. Meade, whose extraordinary vocal ability has earned her comparisons to Golden Age talents, is making her first Live in HD appearance.

Italian tenor Marcello Giordani, who starred in the Live in HD transmissions of La Damnation de Faust, La Fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Simon Boccanegra, and Turandot, sings the title role of Ernani, an honourable bandit in love with Elvira.

Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings his first-ever performances in the pivotal role of Don Carlo, the monarch who wants Elvira for himself. Ferruccio Furlanetto, who received extraordinary critical acclaim for his performance as King Philip in the Live in HD transmission of Don Carlo, sings another famous Verdi bass role, as Elvira’s older suitor, Don Rey Gomez de Silva. Marco Armiliato, who led the hit Met premiere production of Anna Bolena earlier this season, returns to lead a thrilling account of Verdi’s exciting early opera.
