(Lyk Temmingh)
The second instalment of Intimate Encounters, a new series that showcases the virtuosity and passion of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, takes place tomorrow evening (April 22) at the Durban Jewish Centre.
Combining the raw energy of solo playing with the power of a chamber orchestra, the musicians bring to life an impressive collection of works. Classics like Ravel’s beautiful Le Tombeau de Couperin and Stravinsky’s elegant yet sassy Pulcinella Suite are paired with lesser-known gems and world premiere works by South African composers: Angie Mullins’ Murder In The Kitchen and Malcolm Dedman’s Danses Concertantes.
Other works to be performed are Ernest Bloch’s Concerto Grosso No. 1 featuring Liezl-Maret Jacobs on piano and William Walton’s Façade Suite No. 1. The conductor will be Lyk Temmingh.
By breaking free of traditional expectations, the KZN Philharmonic strives to reach out to its community in new ways to create a memorable evening of wonderful music, refreshments, and perhaps even an Intimate Encounter or two.
The concert will take place at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort Road (K.E. Masinga Road) on April 22 at 18h00. Tickets R60 at the door from 17h00. A cash bar and snacks are available before the concert and during interval. Audience members will also have the opportunity to mingle with the musicians during interval.
