OUT CRIES THE POOR HEART

Distinct precise powerful movements describe emotions and thoughts, with a strong use of imagery and symbolism. (Review by Philisiwe Sithole)

Out Cries The Poor Heart is written and directed by Jabulani 'Tamraaf' Matiwane and focuses on a woman struggling with depression after a miscarriage. In trying to deal with her trauma, she finds herself in a spiritual realm. Dismayed and angered by her husband's irresponsibility, she neglects him as he tries to comfort her.

The dance piece deals with themes familiar to us all, yet the unique intensity and articulation of dance, drama and music captured by the performers adds a metaphysical and instructive tone to the work.

The cast include five dancers (Siyanda Duma, Mandisa Ndlovu, Dumalile Mkhwanyazi, Khumbulani Mkhize and Golden Kalala) and a narrator (Nhlanhla Zondi) who acts as the inner voice of the husband. Zondi also provides effective vocal, music and percussion backing.

This dance drama has a traditional African folk lore influence. A conflict begins when demonic forces attack the happy couple and this leads to the tragic death of an unborn baby. The feel of the dance drama is emphasized in percussion and the sound of the guitar adds to the mystic atmosphere of the piece.

Distinct precise powerful movements expressed by the dancers describe their emotions and thoughts, with a strong use of imagery and symbolism. In the climax of the dance drama, the arrival of a traditional doctor to bring healing, resolution and understanding to the matter at hand leads to the cleansing ceremony of the wife. The use of a white cloth suggests water to cleanse and purify the bad omen that saturated the family.
