Motivational and inspiring play relates and talks to every woman. (Review by Philisiwe Sithole)
This is a two-hander play written and directed both by Heather Gielink and Annalisa Gxabu mentored by Peter Court.
A dress re:dress is a message-driven play focusing on issues of female identity. The production raises questions about the choices women make in defining themselves by their positions, purpose and presentation and the sometimes exaggerated lengths to which they normally go in order to attain this.
The set is minimal. It consists of a humungous dress along with a few chairs and tables. It begins with a woman who appears to have low self-esteem yet she creates this beautiful illusioned perfection of beauty. The play escalates in defining what is beauty and how it should be while degrading the simplest naturalistic form of beauty which is self-acceptance and self-love. The dress simply suggests that when you see a dress you immediately associate with gender (female),
A dress re: dress is about women who don't accept who they are but seek to live up to modern beauty which it secludes your esteem and true beauty. This production is very motivational and inspiring. It relates and talks to every woman, also we must not be defined by the media or by people but by who we really are.
The production formed part of Programme 1 of the Playhouse Company’s 2012 Community Arts Festival. It is performed by Heather Gielink and Annelisa Gxabu who portray realistic characters with a good sense of comedy timing. The story is well delivered very clear and to the point. It was a joy to watch. – Philisiwe Sithole
