PLAYHOUSE 2012 COMMUNITY ARTS FESTIVAL

An exciting line-up of five shows comprises The Playhouse Company’s third Community Arts Festival in Durban this month.

The Playhouse Company will host its third Community Arts Festival (CAF) in the Playhouse Loft Theatre between April 12 and 21. As before, the Festival features productions from KZN communities which have received performance and theatre skills training from professional arts practitioners under the aegis of The Playhouse Company.

“In staging our third exciting Community Arts Festival, we once again embrace a vital part of our mandate,” says Playhouse Company Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini. “This includes fostering developmental work within our arts community.”

“To facilitate this project, we have again contracted a team of professional mentors, specialists in stage craft, script writing, music, dance and choreography, to teach and guide the community artists we are working with, helping them to take their productions, which unflinchingly deal with important human issues, to the next level.”

Industry professionals signed by The Playhouse Company to work with this year’s community artists include: Edmund Mhlongo (overall co-ordinator); Ralph Lawson (directing and script-writing); Musa Hlatshwayo (dance and movement); Caroline Smart (voice production); Faca Kulu (singing); Ashwin Singh (contracts and copyright); Peter Court (directing) and Dr Emma Durden (administration & artistic management).

Five productions will feature on this year’s CAF roster, which comprises a Triple Bill (Programme 1) and a Double Bill (Programme 2). Works included in Programme 1 are A Dress Re: Dress, Out Cries the Poor Heart, and The Serpent’s Tale. Titles included in Programme 2 are Meet Bra 6 – 2 and We Salute Yesterday Today and Tomorrow.

CAF Programme 1 will be performed on April 12 at 18h00, April 13 at 11h00 (schools) and April 14 at 14h00. Performances of CAF Programme 2 will be at April 19 at 18h00, April 20 at 11h00 (schools) and April 21 at 14h00.

Admission is free to all CAF performances at The Playhouse.
