Drama for Life (DFL) invites outstanding, innovative, cutting-edge artists from all over Africa to submit their entries for the 2012 Sex Actually Festival, which will take place at various venues across Johannesburg from August 23 to September 1, 2012.
Young newcomers, as well as experienced artists who produce, choreograph or facilitate dance performances, drama pieces, installations, interventions, poetry, exhibitions, workshops or street performances are welcome to apply. The work must speak to the complexities of love, sex, relationships or HIV and AIDS and the human story around these issues in a contemporary society.
The DFL Sex Actually Festival is the only arts festival of its kind on the African continent. The arts education, activist and therapeutic intervention aims to address the above issues, utilising the performing arts in various ways. The festival brings communities from all parts of Johannesburg together to watch, discuss and take part in performances that shift perception, stigma and complacency.
In 2011 Sex Actually hosted acclaimed, award-winning artists like Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre from Durban, as well as Warren Nebe’s groundbreaking street performance Love Happened Here which took actors and audiences on a taxi tour through Braamfontein and Hillbrow. The festival creates an opportunity for artists from different art genres and social backgrounds to showcase their work, explore new methodologies and network with other practitioners in the field of the arts.
The Wits Drama for Life Programme consists of academic, research and community engagement projects that focus on social transformation through Applied Drama, Theatre in Education, Communities and Social Contexts, Drama Therapy and Drama in Education. The annual Sex Actually Festival is one of the major highlights on the Drama for Life annual calendar.
