If Grease is the word, then Westville Boys’ High School is the place, as it prepares to stage the classic musical in May this year.
Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the premiere of the stage production on Broadway, and riding on the successful re-release of the timeless movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the famous American high school love story, written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, has thrilled audiences ever since its first performance at a Chicago theatre in 1972.
Based on Jacobs' own experiences as an adolescent, Grease became a huge hit around the world thanks to its fresh take on love, infatuation, friendship and teenage rebellion.
Coupled with classic songs such as Summer Nights, Those Magic Changes, Sandra Dee and We Go Together, and featuring the iconic full-sized car “Greased Lightnin’” the universal themes of the production ensure it continues to appeal to younger generations.
The show is directed by Devin Möller, with musical direction by Luke Holder and choreography by Fiona Barnes. Joining them is the award-winning and critically-acclaimed professional team of sound designer Megan Levy and lighting designer Mike Broderick.
With its unforgettable music and beloved characters, the well-known story of Sandy, Danny, Rizzo, Kenickie and all the Pink Ladies and T-Birds comes to life starring some of Durban’s most talented teenagers. The production showcases an ensemble cast of 60 and a professional 12-piece theatre band.
